Evaluation Question 2

(The digipak has images on each panel that feature within the video, or with the same mise-en-scene just different shots not featured in the video. This keeps the continuity current and allows the audience to associate each product with each other and know that the digipak will have that particular song on it. Thus its effectiveness is evident as all the products share the same fonts, colours and images, following the conventions of promoting the artist themselves as well as the music they're selling. The umbrellas used in the music video are used during the performance section and therefore are seen as important props and it was essential to use them within the digipak. Each member can be seen clearly on the front panel in the same outfits as they are on the thumbnail of the video, the props used during the video are also displayed enhancing the consistency throughout all the products. The digital music video can be easily passed around with the use of the internet so is more appealing to the younger generation, whereas the digipak could be seen as old fashioned but is likely to be bought by parents as a present; so both need to be appropriate for the different age groups. The combination of the digipak and poster is vital and obvious. The back panel of the digipak with the songs and legal information on, I’ve used for the main image of the poster. It could be argued this does not follow conventions as album covers are usually used for the promotional poster, however because it’s from the digipak itself and the album cover can be seen in the bottom corner it still follows conventions. Their combination is therefore effective as they coincide with one another much like with the music video they link because of the images and font used. When asking about what fonts to use on my poster and digipak the most popular answer was a font on DaFont called Paper Daisy and therefore I've used that on both products. Therefore appealing to the genre and target audience both products will be aesthetically pleasing. However, I would change the poster a bit and add a brighter background because although there are bright coloured umbrellas there's still an overwhelming amount of black which is unconventional in the pop genre. The poster took a while to create, using three separate images of each member with an umbrella and editing them into a collage making it a blur using the Gaussian blur on each image almost giving it an effect like it is raining on the picture which could represent the hardship the song suggests the artist is going through. The umbrellas were used is both the performance aspect and the behind the scenes shots; they represented the girls shielding themselves from happiness. The poster is promoting the single that the video is created for and so it is needed for the distribution to the audience so they know what to look out for. The combination of these is consequently essential and effective as they need each other to make sense to its target audience.)

Evaluation Question 3

3) What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I've received audience feedback in various ways, such as; survey monkey, teacher feedback, focus groups and public comments left on YouTube videos.
Survey Monkey allowed me to define my audience and helped me to create an image for my band and gave good feedback on the questions I asked about the genre of music I'm working in.

For example these results taught me that my artist should most likely be a girl pop band as most people agreed that they are popular in today's society. The most common colour associated with pop is pink which is stereotypical and that's why it was the most used colour in the ancillary texts and one of the colours of the umbrellas. The mise-en-scene question, informed me that bright colours were a must, so the umbrellas are the outcome of this. There's a suggestion of 'matching clothing' which I tried to accomplish in my first edit with black and white clothing and casual clothing, however I didn't like the black and white image as it didn't really fit the genre. This is why I created two simple looks for my second filming of the video: 'glamorous' and 'comfy but girly' these two outfits allowed me to set two different scenes and backgrounds without any drastic changes. Make-up is another main point from the survey answers so the opening scene contains the band putting on make-up, fitting that stereotype.

The next feedback was from my first edit from the teacher.

This feedback encouraged me to re-shoot my video, the main issue was with the lighting so I had to make sure I had access to a more professional light the second time I shot something. The second draft included a lot more movement from the camera as well as different angles which stepped it up massively from the first edit. My research and planning needed to improve a lot as well which I believe I've done since this feedback was given to me.

The feedback I received from my focus group on my first edit.

What I learned from this feedback was that the improvements I needed to make weren't little things, they were one or two major improvements that needed to be made so it all had to be re filmed which was the best option. The mention of props was a main weakness in the first video so when re-filming came around props were one of the biggest things I paid out for. The balloons, confetti and umbrellas were key in the second edit and made a huge difference to the video and even helped it fit its genre and purpose more clearly and gave the video a more effective feel.

The feedback I received for my second draft ancillary texts

This feedback taught me that the products I have created comply with the pop genre and colour scheme is fitting of its purpose. The vibrancy that's in the ancillary texts are eye-catching, it stands out and would be perfect for my target audience.

Feedback for my third draft of my music video

From this feedback I learned that my music video had improved a lot and that was due to the camera work, props and acting. There was definitely a lot more enthusiasm from the band this time, more actions and movement in the performance scene. In the behind the scenes like shots there's still a large amount of bright colours which consists with the pop genre and the ancillary texts that contain similar colours to those shown in the video. When creating my final edit I decided that filters would be a good idea to possibly improve the aesthetic of the video which proved to be popular with my focus group.

When publishing my edits onto YouTube the public have the option to comment on it. This feedback showed me that even people who aren't taking medias a subject like the video which has encouraged me to stick with final edit I've produced.

Music Video Draft 2 and 3

I have done two videos one with filters and one without filters. I put them out to the public on YouTube to see which got the better reviews and did my own focus group.
